Venture Crew 139 is a co-ed scouting unit for girls and boys, ages 14 – 20. The crew historically has been strong in some years and small in others but persists to take teens skiing, hiking and attending Katahdin Area Council events such as camporees and summer camp at Camp Roosevelt. The yearly plan includes: a fall backpacking trip usually in the Western mountains of Maine, multiple skiing/boarding trips in the winter season and a backpacking hike up to Tuckersman Ravine on Mt. Washington in the spring. The mission of Venturing is also to provide community service as needed instilling in the youth a sense of duty to others. Career and college counseling is also an important aspect of Venturing to augment what schools and families provide. Activities are planned under the youth’s own leadership by a Crew Chief/President, Secretary, Treasurer, Quartermaster. Summer Camp Counselor or Life Guard is encouraged as a way to build responsibility, earn money and enhance the Venturer’s college applications.
